Understanding Track Induction
Track Induction is a mandatory entry-level training course and competence for anyone who needs to work on or near Network Rail's operational infrastructure, but who does not yet hold a Personal Track Safety (PTS) competence. It provides essential baseline knowledge required to keep safe in a rail environment.
What is Track Induction?
Track Induction is the foundational training that introduces individuals to the railway environment. It covers crucial safety principles, rules, and hazards associated with working trackside. While it does not authorise individuals to work unsupervised or within a formal Safe System of Work (like a COSS or IWA would), it is a vital prerequisite for any further rail specific training, including PTS. It teaches individuals how to behave safely, understand basic railway signage, and recognise immediate dangers.
Key Knowledge & Awareness Gained through Track Induction:
The primary "duties" or learnings from Track Induction are about personal safety awareness and adherence to basic rules:
Understanding the Railway Environment: Learning about trains, lines, railway infrastructure, and the general hazards present (e.g., trip hazards, live electrical equipment, moving trains).
Railway Rules & Regulations: Basic understanding of the Network Rail Rule Book relevant to working trackside.
Signage & Lineside Furniture: Recognising common railway signs, signals, and equipment.
Safe Walking Routes: Knowing how to walk safely within the railway boundary.
Working Near the Line: Understanding the dangers of approaching trains and the importance of positions of safety.
Emergency Procedures: Basic knowledge of what to do in an emergency, including reporting incidents.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Understanding the mandatory PPE required for working trackside and its correct use.
Site Conduct: Behaving responsibly and safely on the railway.
Where Track Induction is relevant within TES:
Track Induction is the very first step for almost any individual working for TES who will be required to access the operational railway. It is a prerequisite for:
All Operational Roles: Before gaining PTS, COSS, Engineering Supervisor, Points Operator, etc.
Support Roles Requiring Site Access: Personnel in planning, surveying, or supervisory roles who need to visit sites but not necessarily perform direct operational tasks, and are working under the supervision of a competent person (like a COSS).
Apprentices & New Entrants: The first formal railway safety training for anyone starting a career in rail.
