Permanent Way
The Foundation of Our Delivery.
At TES, our Permanent Way (P-Way) department is where it all begins. It’s where many of our people start their careers, where our apprentices learn the ropes, and where our values of hard work, pride, and precision are instilled from day one. In fact, our current P-Way Manager began as one of our very first apprentices, a testament to the strength of the foundation we build here.
Working in P-Way means being hands-on with the railway infrastructure that keeps the country moving. It’s long hours, heavy lifting, and real responsibility. Our teams carry out essential work that includes the inspection, maintenance, and renewal of track, as well as any duties that affect the stability, position, or integrity of the permanent way. Every shift is an opportunity to make a tangible impact on the safety and performance of the rail network.
We train our P-Way teams with a full suite of competencies to ensure they are ready to step up and support delivery at every level. This includes track induction, manual handling, emergency first aid, small tools, plasma cutting, and safety-critical roles such as Controller of Site Safety and Engineering Supervisor.
Our aim is to provide not just technical skills, but the underpinning knowledge of permanent way construction, components, and working methods, so that every team member understands the why as well as the how.
Our experience in P-Way services include:
Track inspection, maintenance, and renewal
Switches and crossings installation
Ballast replacement and tamping support
Adjustments, repairs, and dismantling of permanent way assets
Whether supporting Tier 1 contractors or delivering directly for Network Rail, our P-Way teams are known for their reliability, resilience, and results. With decades of experience behind us, we provide a comprehensive, end-to-end service that’s built on technical excellence, practical know-how, and a deep understanding of the rail environment. Whether it’s maintenance, inspection, or renewal, we supply the safety-critical staff who get the job done right, the first time.
